Hyderabad, Sep 18: Yashoda Hospitals, Hitech City has achieved a significant milestone with its cardiology and pulmonology teams successfully performing a minimally invasive MitraClip procedure on a critically ill 60-year-old patient with severe cardiac and pulmonary complications. The patient had been on ventilator support for nearly three weeks and was suffering from severe mitral regurgitation, resulting in recurrent episodes of heart failure.
The patient’s mitral valve could not close properly, causing significant backward blood flow and placing considerable strain on the heart. Given the patient’s critical condition and associated lung complications, a minimally invasive approach was chosen. The MitraClip procedure, which helps reduce mitral regurgitation without open-heart surgery, was successfully performed by Dr. Kala Jeethender Jain, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, and the Cardiology team, in close coordination with Dr. V. Nagarjuna Maturu, Senior Consultant – Clinical & Interventional Pulmonology, and the Critical Care team.
Dr. Kala Jeethender Jain said,
“This was a challenging case because the patient was critically ill, had severe mitral regurgitation, had significant pulmonary complications, and had been dependent on ventilator support for several weeks. In such high-risk patients, a minimally invasive intervention like MitraClip can offer an important alternative to conventional open-heart surgery. The successful procedure significantly improved the patient’s cardiac condition and enabled us to move towards recovery while avoiding the risks associated with major surgery.”
Following the procedure, the patient showed significant clinical improvement and was successfully discharged just four days after the intervention. The achievement highlights Yashoda Hospitals’ multidisciplinary approach, advanced interventional cardiac capabilities, and ability to manage complex, high-risk cardiac patients through coordinated cardiac, pulmonary, and critical care expertise.
