Patna, August 17: Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor on Monday formally took oath as the newly elected MLA from Bihar's Bankipur Assembly constituency.
Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar administered the oath to Kishor in his chamber, as the Assembly is currently not in session. His swearing-in formally marks his entry into the Bihar Legislative Assembly as an elected representative.
Kishor had won the Bankipur by-election held on July 30, with the result declared on August 3. He defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by more than 19,000 votes, ending the BJP's long-standing hold over the constituency.
The victory also gave the Jan Suraaj Party its first MLA in the Bihar Assembly. Kishor's electoral debut marks a significant shift from his earlier role as a political strategist to that of a legislator.
After taking oath, Kishor said it was a matter of pride to become a member of a House where several prominent Bihar leaders, including Krishna Sinha, Karpoori Thakur, Anugrah Narayan Sinha, Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Ram Vilas Paswan and Sushil Kumar Modi, had served.
He also described his new role as a major responsibility and said he would seek to work for the betterment of society and the state.
Kishor has outlined employment, education, ration distribution and social security among his key priorities for Bankipur. He has also said he would work towards facilitating employment opportunities for 10,000 young people and improving access to essential public services.
With his oath-taking, Kishor now begins his legislative and constituency-level responsibilities as Jan Suraaj's lone MLA, while the party prepares to expand its political presence across Bihar.
