Peace Talks Fail, US Moves to Blockade Strait of Hormuz
Islamabad/Washington, Apr 13 (BNP): Efforts to de-escalate rising tensions between the United States and Iran suffered a major setback after high-level talks in Islamabad concluded without any agreement, further intensifying geopolitical uncertainty in the region.
Iranian state media blamed “excessive demands” from the US side for the collapse of negotiations. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance stated that Washington’s “final and best offer” remains on the table, while acknowledging that significant differences persist between the two sides.
In a major escalation, former US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would impose an immediate naval blockade in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, accusing Iran of extorting commercial vessels. The move is expected to disrupt one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
The US Central Command further confirmed that a broader blockade targeting all maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports will be enforced starting 10 a.m. ET tomorrow. However, it clarified that vessels transiting the Hormuz Strait to non-Iranian ports will not be affected.
The failed talks also underscored ongoing concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Vance reiterated that the United States is seeking firm assurances that Iran will not pursue nuclear weapons, adding that such commitments have yet to be secured.
Meanwhile, the wider Middle East remains volatile. Continued Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, particularly in Nabatieh, have resulted in multiple casualties. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is pursuing “a real peace agreement that will last for generations” with Lebanon.
According to estimates by the Human Rights Activists in Iran, the conflict has resulted in nearly 3,400 deaths, including over 1,600 civilians in Iran. More than 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon, while Israel has reported 23 fatalities. Additionally, 13 US service members have been killed, with two more deaths attributed to non-combat causes.
The collapse of diplomatic efforts and the introduction of military measures have raised serious concerns globally, with analysts warning of potential disruptions to energy markets and the risk of a broader regional conflict.
