I once thought that having control was the same as having power. If I had foresight and control over every detail, everything would remain in order. The more I worked to keep everything well-organized, the more unexpected events occurred. It dawned on me that letting go when necessary is the strongest thing we can do.

The Reasons Control Feels Secure—Yet Isn’t

We frequently feel safer when we have control over things, even when that is not the case. Making meticulous plans and anticipating every issue leads us to believe that we are avoiding any bad experiences. For me, it can be about letting go of the need to be flawless, forgiving oneself, and having faith that things will work out as you go through changes.

You have more room in your mind and emotions when you let go of the things that are preventing you from moving forward. It helps you see things more clearly and lessens internal stress. It might enable you to think more creatively, avoid making too many decisions, and lead a more fulfilled and free life.

1. Where do you feel anxious, tense, or afraid in your life?

2. Often, what you feel is fear—fear of being rejected, failing or losing something.

4. Tell yourself, “I trust the universe,” or “I am able to deal with whatever comes my way.”

5. Remain in the present: The future has not yet arrived, and the past is gone. Nevertheless, you can react to this moment with poise and composure.
